The project was built in the Kalambokies area of the Plagiario farm in the Municipality of Pella and included the construction of:
- Pump station and water tank near the existing well.
- An irrigation network which consists of: PVC pipes of various cross-sections, 45 water intakes of a mouth, 2 valve wells and a discharge well, with the aim of irrigating all the plots of land in the area.
The project includes the construction of a water reservoir as well as an underground irrigation network to irrigate the plots of land with a total area of approximately 400 acres in the Kalambokies area. The water tank will be built on plot number 665, next to an existing borehole with the aim of storing the water, while a small house will be included where the electromechanical equipment of the borehole will be placed. Then the water, through the new irrigation network, will be channeled to the plots to be irrigated. The pipes that will be used for the network will be made of PVC material, of various cross-sections and were chosen based on the conditions prevailing in the area (relief, type of cultivation) in order to achieve the maximum functional efficiency of the project.
PURPOSE OF THE PROJECT
The majority of the residents of the area are employed in the primary sector. The main crops of the study area are peach, apple, pear, asparagus, etc. The purpose of the construction of the reservoir and the network is the automated, more rational and environmentally compatible irrigation of the plots of land in the area. Until now, the irrigation of the plots was carried out either by the use of barrels or by the operation of antiquated shallow boreholes, the vast majority of which operate without a permit. However, the above procedures are considered uneconomical and environmentally harmful. Especially the uncontrolled operation of the wells had as
result in – even a small drop in – the level of the above aquifers. The construction of the water tank and the irrigation network will reverse the existing situation and will work positively for the economy and the environment of the area. The completion of the project implies the rational management, with modern means, of an invaluable natural good such as water, as well as ensuring better irrigation conditions for the crops in the area, having beneficial effects on the production process. At the same time, it solves an important problem of the producers, who in recent years have had difficulty responding to the difficulties they faced due to insufficient irrigation of their crops.
